CCP-EM Workshops and Courses

CCP-EM organises or co-organises several in-person training courses each year and since 2013 we have led or co-led over 40 workshops and taught over 1300 researchers at institutes all over the world.

These course provide intensive training in software and theory for a limited number of participants. We typically select a diverse cohort of students from different institutions, who can then disseminate their learning in their home labs. These courses will be announced/advertised on our mailing list.

EMBO Image processing for cryo-electron microscopy, Birkbeck, UK, 9-16th September 2025

(in-person)

The aim of this EMBO Practical Course is to teach the basic principles and practical aspects of image processing to structural and molecular biologists wishing to determine macromolecular structures by cryo EM. The course will concentrate on processing of high-resolution image data, for both single particle images and tomograms, and will be aimed at advanced PhD students and postdocs who use cryo EM for structural analysis. See site for more details.

Icknield 2025, Harwell Campus, 13-17 October 2025

(in-person)

The Icknield model building workshop will run again in 2025. Details TBC.

Past training courses and events

Web For The Win! – CERN inverted school of computing, 24-27 March 2025

A crash course in web application development. This lecture goes over web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JS), tooling, common UI libraries and frameworks, the fundamentals of React development and testing, tldr user experience design, APIs, and highlights modern features like web assembly and WebGL which allows for powerful web apps like Moorhen (Coot) and Mol* to exist. Course content and recorded lecture available here.

Czech Society for Structural Biology: Structural analysis of biomolecules utilizing CCP4 and CCP-EM, 18-20 March 2025

The course is intended mainly (but not only) for MSc and PhD students who are interested in the field of structural biology. They will receive a basic theoretical introduction into crystallography, Cryo-EM and SAXS and then will be learn how to master the software tools of CCP4 and CCP-EM packages (and more), see programme.

EMBO Integrative structural biology: solving molecular puzzles, EMBL Hamburg, 17 – 24 Nov 2024

Integrative structural biology has become a key strategy for determining the structure of biological macromolecules and their complexes. This method entails characterising the 3D structure through an array of complementary techniques, subsequently combining the data to form a consensus model using computational methodologies. Further details details available here.
